What are Dental Crowns?
Crowns are porcelain “caps” that effectively replace the upper part of a tooth, including the chewing surface. They are typically used when the chewing or the surrounding areas are cracked, chipped, or damaged beyond repair, and are a fantastic way of avoiding the extraction of the natural tooth. By replacing the damaged area of the tooth, patients can save the appearance and function of their smile.
What are our Crowns made from?
Spring Branch TX crowns dentist Dr. Chavez chooses to use porcelain crowns consisting of a high-tech, super-strong aesthetic porcelain material that is both sturdy and natural looking. His feeling is that both form and function are essential to the proper restoration of a tooth, and believes that porcelain crowns offer the best of both worlds.
In some cases, Dr. Chavez may recommend a different material, depending on the individual patient’s tooth and smile.
How are our Crowns made?
Porcelain is fused onto a metal base, to create a strong and long-lasting dental crown. If the tooth is very visible (i.e. in the front of the mouth) however, these metal-based dental crowns may show the underlying metal at the gum line, as gums recede over time. Dr. Chavez overcomes this by using an all-porcelain collar that essentially blocks view of the dental crowns metallic support, or by using an alternative material.
How do Dental Crowns work?
Prior to fitting the new crown into position, Spring Branch TX crowns dentist Dr. Chavez will need to remove the damaged and decayed part of the tooth, and firmly place a temporary crown onto it. The removal and application of the temporary dental crown is all done in one visit.
The construction of the physical crown may take some time, but once it is complete you can return to our dental office and Dr. Chavez will bond the new dental crown into place, and ensure that it fits in perfectly.
In many cases, the final crown can be placed on the same day the damaged part of the tooth is removed, eliminating the need for a temporary crown!
