What is a Root Canal, and why should my Spring Branch dentist perform one?

Each and every one of your teeth consists of several layers, known as dental pulp, dentin, and enamel. The enamel layer is the outermost layer that immediately protects your tooth surface from food, bacteria, and other dangers. The dentin layer is the second outer layer that protects the sensitive dental pulp of a tooth—the tissue that helps the tooth become embedded in the gums and jaw.

If the dental pulp becomes infected or damaged due to negligence of proper oral hygiene techniques, exposing the tooth to bacterial invasion, the root begins to die. This in turn can eventually lead to the loss of teeth, and a gap in your smile!

In order to prevent the loss of teeth, Spring Branch dentist Dr. Chavez can perform a root canal. A root canal is a process of removing the damaged nerve and pulp and cleaning and sealing the area to prevent the bacteria from re-entering the tooth.

Signs that the tooth root may need a root canal:

  • Severe/minimal pain
  • Surrounding gum tissue is swollen
  • Discoloration
  • Infection is visible on an X-ray
